Healthy Body - Healthy You

WATER
Love it, hate it or don't see the importance of why water is vital for our bodies keep reading.......
Firstly I want you to ask yourself this
- Am I getting enough water in my body?
- Do I make enough effort to drink a sufficient (or any) water during the day?
I am pretty sure we all answered no, we do not get enough water in our bodies on a daily basis.
- Did you know our skin is our largest organ!
- Our bodies are made up of a lot of water.
- The adult body is made up of 60% water
- The brain and heart is composed of 73% water
- The lungs composed of 83%
- The skin contains 64% water
- Even the bones contain 31% water
Who knew?!
The main functions of water in the body include:
- Regulates body temperature
- Moistens tissues in the eyes, mouth and nose
- Protects the organs and tissues
- Carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells
- Lubricates joints
- Reduces burden on the kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products
- Helps dissolve minerals and nutrients to make them accessible to the body
So you see there are many benefits of water.
The body contains water primarily from absorbing it via the digestive tract. Additionally a small amount of water produced when the body processes certain nutrients.
The body looses water primarily by excreting it primarily through urine via the kidneys
What happens when we drink more water?
- Proper hydration
- Increase in concentration
- Reduces bloating
- More energy
- Helps flush more toxins from the body - the more toxins in the body can cause inflammation and irritation in your gut
- Aids better digestion
- Prevents and reduces constipation by keeping the bowls moving
- You feel more awake, alert and refreshed
So you see there are many benefits drinking plenty of water the positive effects water has on the body
What are the effects on the skin?
Drinking water also has a positive impact on the skin, hair and nails.
Your skin will definitely thank you for it.
Keep in mind....
When we sweat we are excreting toxins from the body (including water)
For example if you sweat 1 cup of water your body needs 2 cups put back in to the body.
How much water should I be drinking?
We should be drinking on average 3 litres of water a day.
Aim to drink 1 litre in the morning, another litre during the afternoon and the final litre during the evening.
If you are thinking that is A LOT of water I highly recommend getting a re usable water bottle that fits 1 litre of water. This will encourage you to drink more.
Alcohol on the body
Did you know if we drink 1 unit of alcohol our skin has a 'skin hangover' which lasts for 28 days!
Alcohol majorly dehydrates the organs and the skin so make sure for every unit (glass of wine for example) you drink a glass of water afterwards. Alcohol is toxic for the body and lack of water means your body holds on to those toxins.
Flavoured Water, Filter Water, Tap Water..... What is best?
The main thing is you are consuming water.
Tap Water is no way any worse than filtered water. However dependant on where you live water from your tap can be 'hard water' meaning filtered water could be a preferred option for you.
Flavoured water (still or sparkling) tastes nicer than plain water, however keep in mind in sparkling / still water additives will be added for taste - sucralose
Don't over consume due to the sugar content.
Cold Water with lemon / Hot water with lemon what is best?
Neither! Some people believe that to start the day with a cold or hot water with lemon is cleansing and detoxifies the body.
This is completely wrong. Lemon is not harmful and is high in sugar. The acidity in lemon is believed to kick start the body, flushing out toxins and cleaning out the body.
The best thing for flushing out toxins is by drinking water daily. The liver and kidneys are constantly flushing out toxins, but without a high content of water this is a slower process.
So by all means drink your water with lemon, lime or fresh mint but keep in mind its not a magical detox remedy.
The only down side of drinking water is you will need to pee a bit more often through the day, keep that in mind. Don't drink a litre of water then go on a hike unless you are willing to pee in the bushes.
On the other hand think of all those toxins you are eliminated from the body.
So all that is left for me to say is go and drink a glass of water
Until next time......
Best Wishes
