Male Skin Characteristics

April 30, 2019

Men's skincare is different to women's. This is because a male skin is 25% thicker than women's skin. On top of this, men's skin has larger pores which produce more sebum (oil)

The differences between male and female skin is caused by hormones, specifically testosterone.

The impact of testosterone on the skin -

The male epidermis for example is 20% thicker than the female epidermis, being able to bind a larger amount of moisture, and containing more collagen in all ages, making male skin more dense and vigorous. Androgens such as testosterone stimulate sebum production.

Collagen -

Men have a higher collagen density than women. Because of this naturally occurring collagen density difference, it is more common for women to show premature signs of ageing faster than men even though they are of the same age.

Sebum -

Men have naturally larger pores and produce more sebum. Problem prone skin such as breakouts, clogged pores, blackheads as well as seborrheic dermatitis cases can be more exacerbated and last longer in male skin due to higher sebum levels. Unlike women, for male skin the sebum production remains the same throughout their life and does not decrease with age.

Texture -

Male skin texture is different than that of a women's.

It is tougher and rougher because of a thicker stratum corneum, this is also the cause to the difference in facial wrinkling that develops over the years, where men are prone to developing deeper facial wrinkles also associated with subcutaneous fat loss.

Facial Hairs -

Regular shaving stresses male facial skin. One of the main daily grooming actives for men is shaving and this can lead to a more sensitive, easily irritated skin.

Shaving can lead to cuts, razor burns (folliculitis), ingrown hairs (pseudofolliculitis barbae) as well as an over exposure of the skin to external influences as it clears off microscopic pieces of dead skin, which can also be caused by a weaken skin barrier function.

How can men take care of their skin?

1. Establish a skin care regime

2. Wash your face daily to remove excess oils, dirt and bacteria from the skins surface.

Find a cleanser that works for your skin type. This will help deep clean the skin and clear the pores.

3. Moisturise your face daily to keep skin soft and supple

4. Exfoliate at least once a week to remove dry, dead, flaky skin cells. This also allows for better penetration of products, such as facial oils, serums and moisturiser.
