Lets talk hair removal.... waxing in particular
Firstly, waxing is a permanent method of hair removal. Unlike shaving, when waxing you are removing the hair directly from the root. Over a gradual amount of time and regular professional waxing treatments, the follicles become weaker and eventually stop producing hair follicles meaning hair free skin! How long this process takes is different for each individual, some factors include how often and how long you have been having waxing treatments, the texture and amount of hair alongside home care.
Waxing is fabulous at quickly, affordably
and safely removing hair from areas of the body.. It is highly beneficial to have a professional perform your waxing treatments in comparison to using home waxing products. When seeing a professional, the specialist will be able to assess the hairs, skin condition, temperature of the wax plus the expert technique and application will ensure a clean smooth wax. No pain, no bruising and no burning.
Waxing lasts much longer than shaving. When you shave, you are only removing the surface layer of the hair. The follicle still has blood supply below the skins surface and this is why within a few hours the dreaded stubble creeps back. The great thing about waxing is that, unlike shaving, you are taking the hair directly from the root. After a period of consistent treatments, hairs grow back slower, thinner and eventually no follicles will be made, meaning no hair.... hoorah! Results from waxing can last several weeks before growing back making this so much better than shaving.
Did you know that waxing is also a form of exfoliation.... that's right, when we remove the hair we also remove the surface layer of skin, leaving you with silky smooth hair free skin.
Different types of waxing
There are two methods of waxing; warm wax and hot wax.
With warm wax, the wax is applied directly to the skin using a spatula.. Strips of fabric are smoothed over the wax and then effectively is removed quickly, removing the wax and hair from the skin.
With hot wax, the wax is applied directly to the skin using a spatula but unlike warm wax, there is no fabric strip used. Once the hot wax has cooled and dried on the skin, the wax is removed by lifting the edge of hot wax and i
s pulled directly from the skin.
Warm and Hot wax can be used on all areas of the body. Hot wax is fantastic for more coarse, curly hair often found on the bikini and underarm areas.
So let us dive right into the benefits of waxing
1 Less regrowth
The best known benefit of waxing is that the hair does not grow back as fast like with shaving. Waxing removes the hairs from the root. With shaving, the hairs are cut off close to skin level, even with every close shave, this still leaves a considerable amount of hair just below the surface ready to appear in a couple or hours or the following day or two. This is really important to understand if you are considering whether waxing is better for you than shaving.
As a result, with waxing, you get an incredibly smooth even finish. No post shower stubble or missed areas! Even those who experience fast hair growth with waxing you can expect to enjoy the benefits of waxing for 3-4 weeks before your next treatment.
2 Finer regrowth
It is not just about the amount of regrowth, it is also about the type of regrowth you will expect.
With shaving, as we said, you cut off the hair. This results in a blunt cut. Hairs aren't naturally blunt. It's why hair regrowth after shaving feels stubbly.
With waxing, the hair is removed at the follicle. This means that when the hair regenerates and does eventually grow back, it does so with a finely tapered end. This end is finer and not stubbly, meaning that even whilst waiting for your next wax, your skin won't feel hairy add it would do post shaving.
3 Waxing is like exfoliation
A build up of dead skin cells and grime on our skin can cause outbreaks of skin irritation, blemishes and dryness. It is why we exfoliate, in order to remove the dead skin cells.
With waxing, all of this is removed at the time the wax is removed from the skin. The result is that the waxed areas are smooth, radiant, clean and fresh. That said it is not specifically an exfoliation treatment method, and for the best results we recommend you exfoliate a few days prior to your waxing appointments. Do not exfoliate 24 hours either side of having a waxing treatment as this can make the skin sensitive.
4 Waxing banishes shaving rash
Shaving rash is inflammation of the skin caused by irritation. If you are prone to shaving rash then one of the main wax benefits is preventing skin irritation.
With waxing you are exposing the area to friction every few days, which can make irritation worse.
With waxing, you can avoid this further for nearly a month at a time giving your skin a chance to heal and calm down
5 Fewer ingrown hairs
Shaving can be a disaster for many people in terms of ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs can be painful and look unsightly. They can become infected, sore and cause scarring.
A professional waxing specialist will knowledgeably ensure they remove the wax strips in the way best to reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. This involves a fast removal whilst the skin is held tight.
6 Waxing says goodbye to itching
Many people find that immediately post shave they experience itching and then as soon as regrowth starts, the itching ramps up again.
With waxing you will experience little to no pain or discomfort plus be itch free for longer.
7 Waxing means no more shaving cuts
You may of had plenty of years experience shaving your legs and yet still somehow nick your skin with the razor. It is not surprising as you need a good lather for a clean shave which means that your hands and the razor become slippery. When cutting the skin with a blade, aside from the bleeding the skin can potentially scar once the scab has been formed and healed. No one wants this.
A professional waxing treatment will not result in any nicks or cuts to your skin and there is no damage to the skin at all.
8 It's an opportunity for pampering and some you time
Yes you read the correctly. Waxing can be a relaxing experience to some extend. Soft lighting, candles and lightly fragrant aromas, comfortable bed and cushions already sounds more appealing than shaving feeling cold in the shower slipping all over trying not to fall.
Having smooth skin for longer not only looks and feels nicer than shaving, but it also enhances skin and body confidence.
Be aware that if you get waxing treatments only in the winter and shave in the summer, the hairs get confused and the hairs will begin to grow back thicker.
Also one off waxing appointments will be effective for an occasion or a short few weeks, but for long term results and benefits from having waxing it is essential to have regular treatments with a professional .
Pre Waxing things to do and avoid
- Exfoliate a couple of days before your waxing appointments, this removes dead dry skin cells and lifts the hairs up
- Keep skin hydrated
- Avoid chemical peels, sun beds, saunas, steam rooms and injectables 48 - 72 hours prior to appointments
On the day of your appointment
- Wear loose comfortable clothing where possible.
Example having a leg wax then squeezing back into your tight skinny jeans will make the skin hot and cause friction
- Wear comfortable knickers ladies, we do not judge on underwear choice. Like above, if you are having a intimate wax best not to put back on a thong or g string. Disposable underwear is available also.
- Do not coat your skin in thick oil / body cream just before your appointment as this will cause a barrier and the wax will not stick to the skin, sliding right off.
- Avoid make up or perfume on the areas you have waxed. This will in some instances cause skin irritation.
- Do not have a hot bath or shower following your waxing treatments. Lukewarm shoer on the day before and after is recommended
After Care post waxing
- Keep the skin hydrated
- Exfoliate the skin once a week.
How long does the hair have to be?
So many people are under the belief that you
have to really grow the hair to enable an effective hair removal treatment. Well the answer is yes and no.
No you do not have to grow your hair long that you could braid the hairs, but yes there has to be some hair regrowth.
We recommend the hair is the length of a grain of rice. At this length the hairs will be easily removed from the skin. If shorter than a grain of rice in length, the waxing will not be as effective.
And lastly one more thing to be aware of
Just like our eyelashes, hair on our heads and body hair it all grows in 3 stages.
This means that although the majority of the hairs will effectively be removed, there may be the odd one or two that is at a different stage in the three stages of hair re growth. This is ok, we can tweeze the hair or as the hair has been waxed, even if it remains, it has become weakened so should naturally fall out - keeping the skin moisturised helps.
